Welcome to Nottingham & Nottinghamshire

Robin Hood Country

Perhaps during your stay you would like to follow the Civil War Trail of 1642, travelling through the city, towns and villages visiting notable landmarks on your journey through Nottinghamshire and Leicestershire. Maybe you'll even see a re-enactment of a famous battle by one of the enthusiastic historical groups..

Perhaps some of the great houses with their gardens and deer parks would be your choice - Chatsworth House; Newstead Abbey (home of Lord Byron); Haddon Hall,; Rufford Abbey & Country Park; Calke Abbey; Kedleston Hall; Hardwick Hall; Sudbury Hall; Belvoir Castle; Tamworth Castle; Grimsthorpe Castle and Newark Castle are all accessible for a great day out.

Churches and Museums abound including the Home and Birthplace of the world famous novelist, poet and painter D.H.Lawrence born at Eastwood in 1885. He is famour (or infamous) for his passionate romantic novel "Lady Chatterly's Lover" but his talents extended far beyond that and reading it today you might wonder why it caused such outrage.

The National Tramway Museum, Newark Air Museum, Woolaton Hall & Deer ParkGalleries of Justice and Nottingham Castle Museum, to name but a few, or perhaps even venture into the 700yr old man made caves beneath the city itself.

Country Parks with their open spaces, trees, flower borders, lakes and somewhere to enjoy a family picnic are a great favourite. Why not visit Clumber Park, Langold Country Park, Rufford Country Park, Sherwood Forest Country Park or Sherwood Pines Forest Park. For that fun day out go to Wheelgate Park. or Alton Towers theme park and gardens are also easily accessible.

Seeking Robin Hood? There are lots of events and activities based on the great legend throughout the year. Why not follow one of the trails into Sherwood Forest itself and find the renowned Major Oak. Unfortunately, the myth of this tree hides the fact that around the time when Robin Hood was supposed to be active, it could have been scarcely more than a sapling and incapable of hiding anything as large as a human being. Nevertheless, it is old enough to have seen many ages of our history.

Sport plays a major part in most of our lives and Nottingham is a great centre with its many Golf Courses. The National Water Sports Centre with a 2000m regatta course, man made white water slalom and water ski lagoon.

A wide range of activities is offered for the complete novice and international athlete. For the less adventurous the centre offers gentle walks through its beautiful Country Park. The new National Ice Centre hosts major sports events and provide fun on the ice.

For those who enjoy a 'flutter' then Nottingham Race Course holds regular meetings throughout the year and Donnington Park with its Motor Museum and Sunday Market is a must for young and old.

There are lots of Things To Do In Nottinghamshire - Nottingham is home to a host of family attractions from Castles and Churches, Country Parks, Craft Centres, Farm Parks, Fun Parks, Heritage Centres, Houses, Gardens, Museums, Galleries, Outdoor Markets, Sports facilities, Concert Halls, Theatres and Visitor Centres - the choice is yours...

Sunday Morning Leisure

Car Boot SaleCar Boot Sales are regarded by some people as a treat with little to equal it for passing a leisurely summer Sunday morning. Undoubtedly, there are rarities to be found and bargains to be had but even if you find nothing worth buying, it can be interesting fun to walk around and see the sights. They are also great places for "people watching". Our local Sunday Car Boot Sale is usually held either on the left about a mile outside East Leake on the way to Gotham, or at Bunny Lane alongside the railway line near the Gypsum Works. This is a small market with more individuals than traders so is ideal for children. The entrance/parking fee is accordingly small so if you fancy a bit of local colour, this might be worth an hour or two out of your stay.

The Great Central Railway

The Great Central RailwayOne of greatest railway journeys in the world, the Great Central Railway is the UKs only double track, main line heritage railway. It’s the only place in the world where full size steam engines can be seen passing each other – just as it was when steam ruled the rails. Trains run every weekend of the year, bank holidays and daily in the summer. In addition, First Class Restaurant Car Services provide 4 or 6 course meals, whilst travelling between Loughborough and Leicester or childhood dreams can come true with a Drive a Train Experience. We also run a number of family events, including Bonfire Night and Santa Specials.
